3rd Annual Lecture Series: "Embracing Diversity"
 
Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is hosting the 3rd Annual Lecture Series, this year entitled "Embracing Diversity." All events are free and open to the public. Unless otherwise noted, all events will be held in Room 112 in the College Administration Building on the main campus. The events in February are as follows:

"Embracing Diversity: Self-Awareness and Personal Engagement" - Thursday, February 5 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. ECTC Professor Michael Coyle will facilitate activities and discussion designed to help people work and live together more effectively in an increasingly inter-culturally connected world community.

"Encouraging Diversity in Education: Learning Languages and Traveling Abroad" - Thursday, February 12 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. - A panel discussion with ECTC Professors Jean Dudgeon, Camille Hill and Alberto Moreno and Instructors Patty Guardiola and Allison Palumbo.

"Racial Diversity in Tolkien." - Tuesday, February 24 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. - ECTC Instructors Mary Beth Allen and Jacqueline Hawkins will discuss varied themes of racial and ethnic divisiveness and reconciling individual and cultural difference in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit.

"Starting Here: Religious Diversity in Kentucky" - Thursday, February 26 from 6 - 7 p.m. - ECTC Professor Beth Cahaney will examine the major religions of the world and their presence in Kentucky and show that immigration and religious conversion account for much of the diversity among Kentuckians.

Events in March include:

"A Day Without a Mexican: Multi-Culturalism & the Paradox of Affluence" - Thursday, March 5 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. - ECTC's student honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, will host this film followed by a student panel presentation and group discussion.

"Social Institutions as Systems of Oppression" - Thursday, March 26 from 6 - 7 p.m. - ECTC Instructor Susan Berry will lead a discussion about various institutions in our society and how they can be identified as systems of oppression - Presented in conjunction with Women's History Month celebration.

Events in April include:

"A Cherokee Perspective on the Trail of Tears" - Thursday, April 2 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. - Featuring speaker Troy Wayne Poteete, Justice on the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation, Vice President of the National Trail of Tears Association, former member of the National Council of the Cherokee Nation. Co-sponsored by Anthropology 221.

"Camino Flamenco" - Wednesday, April 15 from 6 - 7 p.m. - In the Science Auditorium - A professional flamenco company whose members take pride in bringing the passion and art of flamenco to the community. Sponsored by ECTC's Multi-Cultural Committee.

"What's Gender Got To Do With It?" - Thursday, April 16 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. - Instructor Allison Palumbo will discuss issues of gender diversity and how gender as a construct affects expressions of individuality and social relations.
