Groundbreaking at Springfield Campus May 15
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. --- Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held Thursday, May 15 for the new Springfield Campus of Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC). ECTC President Dr. Thelma J. White, Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) President Dr. Michael B. McCall, state Sen. Dan Kelly of Springfield and Washington County Judge-Executive John A. Settles will lead a delegation of state, local and college officials who are expected to participate in the 3:30 p.m. ceremony in the Springfield-Washington County Commerce Center. The event is open to the public. Funding for the $14.5 million, 47,000-square-foot building was approved by the 2006 Kentucky General Assembly. When completed in late 2009, the new campus will serve Washington, Marion, Nelson, Spencer and surrounding counties. "We are pleased and excited to be moving into the construction phase of our Springfield Campus, which will provide the space necessary for us to expand technical training for existing businesses and industries and meaningful workforce development programs that will help attract new companies to the area," Dr. White said. Major program areas will include machine tool, tool and die, EDM, industrial maintenance, metrology, fluid power, basic electricity, electrical construction and motor controls. ECTC also will provide continuing education courses for area professionals and non-credit, personal enrichment courses for local citizens. "These programming decisions are based, in part, on the recommendations of our Springfield Campus program advisory committee, which includes representatives from area businesses, industries, government and education," Dr. White said. "Our classes will be of the highest quality, taught by highly-qualified faculty and designed specifically to meet local needs." ECTC will partner with St. Catharine College in Springfield to ensure that students have access to general education classes. Ross Tarrant Architects of Lexington is the project architect. Morel Construction Company of Louisville is the general contractor.
