Classical Guitarist Kevin Shank to Perform at ECTC

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will present "An Afternoon of Classical Guitar," performed by Kevin Shank. The concert will be held in the Morrison Gallery of the college at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 30. Mr. Shank is a candidate for a Master of Music degree at the University of Louisville, and he is presenting the recital in partial fulfillment of his degree requirements. The program will include an exciting mixture of Spanish music, classical guitar music by Bach and Giuliani, and Afro-Cuban music. Mr. Shank will conclude with an arrangement of the spiritual "What a Friend," arranged by the late Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. Sponsored by the Fine Arts Committee of the college, the concert is free and open to the public.

Kevin Shank was born and raised in Coventry, Rhode Island. He pursued his studies of guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated cum laude in 1984. Kevin joined the US Army Band in October of 1985 and broadened his skills in all areas of performance, including jazz, rock, and classical guitar. While stationed in various assignments, Kevin had the opportunity to study classical guitar with Michael Newman at the Mannes College of Music in New York and with Yasunori Kitsukawa while stationed in Japan. He has performed for many dignitaries, to include Colin Powell, Shirley Temple Black, and former President George H. W. Bush. Kevin has recently performed on the radio program "Kentucky Homefront," at the University of Louisville and Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.
