Campus nominating committees and editors of the annual directory have included the names of these students based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. They join an elite group of students from more than 1,400 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations.
Outstanding students have been honored in the annual directory since it was first published in 1966. The following students were selected this year from Elizabethtown Community and Technical College:
Daniel Douglas, son of Michael and Jennifer Douglas of Elizabethtown, is a 2006 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. Douglas will graduate from ECTC in May 2008 with an Associate in Science Degree and an Associate in Arts Degree. He plans to continue his studies at Western Kentucky University will he will pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Douglas received scholarships both years he attended ECTC, was named to the Dean's List and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He is active in his church, where he has delivered Christmas baskets for Helping Hand and helped with yard work for elderly parishioners, in addition to service projects for the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and Ronald McDonald House. "ECTC is a great place to get your first two years of college and then transfer to a four-year college to finish up," said Douglas.
Megan Dutcher, daughter of Mary Ellen and Gary Dutcher of Elizabethtown, is a 2005 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. Dutcher will graduate from ECTC in May 2008 with an Associate in Arts Degree, and plans to continue her education at the University of Louisville where she will pursue both a Bachelor's degree and Master's Degree in Music Education. Dutcher was recognized as ECTC's student of the month for March 2007 by the Elizabethtown Noon Rotary Club and was awarded the Elizabethtown Hardin County Industrial Foundation Training Consortium Scholarship. She has been a member of the ECTC Choristers and an instrumental accompanist, and volunteers with the TK Stone Middle School Band, instructing the flute section. In addition, Dutcher is an active member of the Elizabethtown High School Band Boosters and a certified chaperone for the school district. "I am a strong supporter of community college systems. I believe it is the backbone of a community that allows its members to pursue learning, knowledge and higher degrees for both personal and professional growth," said Dutcher.
Janet Rose Henderson, Caneyville, is a 1977 graduate of Ahrens Vocational Technical High in Louisville, Kentucky. Henderson will graduate from ECTC in May 2008 with an Associate in Arts Degree. She plans to continue her education at either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville, where she will pursue Bachelors and Masters Degrees in psychology. Henderson served as managing editor of the ECTC student newspaper, The Street, and won the Social and Behavioral Sciences and Expository Essay awards. She is a member of Bethesda Baptist Church, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and GSA. "Attending ECTC has been the most rewarding experience of my life thus far. I love the faculty and the students here," said Henderson. "Before my college career, I worked as an auto mechanic for many years, and then as a construction worker. I loved both jobs, but will enjoy sitting down for a living now."
Miranda Miller, Elizabethtown, is a 1992 graduate of Central Hardin High School. She will graduate in May 2008 with an Associate in Arts Degree. Miller is studying elementary education, with an emphasis on special education. She plans to continue her education at Western Kentucky University, where she will pursue Bachelors and Masters degrees in Elementary Education/Special Ed. Miller serves as president of ECTC's Student Government Association and was past vice-president. She is the student representative to the ECTC Board of Directors, and a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society with a 3.68 GPA. Miller was nominated for the All USA Today Academic Team for 2007-2008 and was awarded numerous scholarships. She volunteers in community activities like Repair Affair and has served as a peer mentor. "I love to help people take that first step toward their academic success and self-fulfillment," she said.
Lisa Page, Leitchfield, is a 1982 graduate of Victor J. Andrew High School in Tinley Park, Illinois. Page will graduate from ECTC in May 2008 with an Associate in Science Degree. She plans to continue her education at Western Kentucky University where she will pursue a Bachelors Degree in Middle Grade Education in Math and English, and a Masters Degree in English. Page served ECTC as a student ambassador, vice president of communications for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and vice president/treasurer for The Phoenix Club. She has served her community as a volunteer with Grayson County Youth Soccer, KEA-Student Program, Clarkson Elementary School PTO President and member of the Site-based Decision-making Council. "Attending ECTC was a very rewarding and life-altering experience that I will treasure," said Page. "And I was able to share ECTC with my daughter, Rebecca, who graduated last year."
