Phoenix Club Brings Awareness of Domestic Violence

The Phoenix Club is a student-based organization of Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. Officers are college students, but membership can include faculty, staff and concerned citizens. The purpose of the club is to be a central information point for the area to bring awareness of family violence including domestic violence and child abuse. This spring the club is sponsoring two community events. On April 11 at 11 a.m. the club will sponsor and participate in a Walk for Awareness at Freeman Lake in Elizabethtown. All community members are invited to participate. For each mile walked, one dollar will be contributed by the Take the Walk organization to a charity of choice. More information is available at www.takethewalk.net . Take the Walk is a non-profit organization founded and funded by the singing group "Hanson." Those planning to participate will meet at Freeman Lake Park with preregistration beginning at 10:30 am. Participants may register after the Walk as well. We will walk one mile around the Lake and have refreshments at the end of the Walk. This is a good opportunity to learn about the purpose of the Phoenix Club and meet the members. Information about Phoenix Club membership and issues surrounding family violence will be available. It is a pleasant activity for children and adults to contribute to an important cause during this Easter season. The second event is the third annual Child Abuse Awareness Day and Vigil to be held on April 28th at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. Videos will be shown and informational displays available for viewing from 9 a.m. in Room 112 of the Administration Building. The Vigil will begin at 7 p.m. in the same location. It will include poetry, music, speakers and a candle lighting ceremony in memory of those who have been victims of child abuse or family violence. The community is invited to attend. The theme of this year's vigil is "In Hard Times." Unfortunately, as our society suffers from job losses and financial problems, occurrences of family violence increase. Providing information and community support is one small thing we can do to help with the prevention of family violence and assistance to victims.
