Terms of Use and Important Points

Berry’s Learning Style Assessment may be used at no cost for non-commercial purposes by individuals who wish to determine their own learning style profile and by educators who wish to use it for teaching, advising, or research.

Users of learning styles assessments should be aware of three important points:

  1. Assessment results provide an indication of an individual's preferred learning style and can indicate the preferences of a group of students (e.g. a class), but they should not be over-interpreted. If someone does not agree with the description of the selected category based upon the answers to their assessment, the individual's judgment should rule over the instrument results.

  2. A student's preferred learning style merely provides an indication of possible challenges and tendencies or habits that might lead to difficulty in academic settings. It does not reflect a student's suitability or unsuitability for a particular subject, discipline, or profession. Labeling students can be misleading and even destructive if the student uses the label as justification for a major shift in curriculum or career goals. Nor should a learning style preference serve as an excuse for a bad grade or criticism of a teacher.

  3. Learning styles are not etched in stone. It is possible for a person to change their behavior and thought processes if their preferred way of being is not working for them. It doesn’t mean that their preferences might necessarily change but their behaviors might.
