Learning Styles and What They Mean

How do you "process" information?

Sequential processing

Some left brain (sequential) characteristics

  • I usually wear a watch
  • I often keep a journal
  • I believe there is a right way and wrong way to do everything
  • The expression "life is just a bowl of cherries" makes no sense to me
  • If I lost something, I'd try to remember where I saw it last
  • I'm pretty good at math
  • If I had to assemble something, I'd read the directions first
  • Setting goals for myself helps keep me from slacking off
  • If I have a tough decision to make, I write down the pros and the cons
  • I'd make a good detective
  • If someone asks me a question, I turn my head to the right
  • I keep a to-do list
  • I feel comfortable expressing myself in words
  • Before I take a stand on an issue, I get all the facts
  • If I forgot someone's name, I'd go through the alphabet until I remember it
  • I have considered becoming a lawyer, journalist, or doctor

The left side of the brain processes data symbolically in the form of letters, numbers, words, and abstract ideas. It stores it in a sequential, step-by-step order. The left side absorbs information in a linear order, bit by bit, one piece at a time. It has difficulty getting the big picture unless information is presented sequentially.

Global processing

Some right brain (global) characteristics

  • I hate following directions
  • I find sticking to a schedule is boring
  • I would rather draw someone a map than tell them how to get somewhere
  • If I don't know which way to turn, I let my emotions guide me
  • I'm often late getting places
  • Some people think I'm psychic
  • When somebody asks me a question, I turn my head to the left
  • If I have a problem, I try to work it out by relating it to one I've had in the past
  • When I talk, I gesture a lot
  • I believe there are two sides to every story
  • I can tell if someone is guilty just by looking at them
  • I've considered becoming a poet, a politician, an architect, or a dancer
  • I lose track of time easily
  • When I'm confused, I usually go with my gut instinct

The right side processes data in a sensory way, perceiving the world through the senses without words. It stores information in a simultaneous, global way. It sees the whole picture at once. It has difficulty receiving information in a step-by-step way unless it gets the big picture.
