Motorcycle Rider Courses

Registration Information

For New Riders

Basic Rider's Course (BRC)

This course introduces new riders to motorcycling and provides insights into basic riding skills. It also develops street-riding strategies. On–cycle experience is aimed at developing riding skills and confidence. Proper protective attire is required, but a motorcycle license or permit is not required for course registration and participation. The course combines classroom and on-cycle instruction.

 

Liability waivers are required from all course participants. If you are under 18 years of age you must have the waiver signed by a parent or guardian. You must have a valid driver's license to take this course.

 

Proper attire includes:


Over-the-ankle boots or shoes

Long pants

Long-sleeve shirt or jacket

Full-fingered gloves

Helmet (provided)

Attendance and successful completion of all classroom and riding activities are required.  Each class requires an entire weekend, based on the schedule:

Friday, 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM, and

Saturday,  8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, and

Sunday,  8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

For Licensed Riders

Experienced Rider Course (ERC)

The experienced rider course is for those who want to renew and practice basic and street riding maneuvers on their motorcycle. The course polishes riding skills, develops finesse and emphasizes strategies to reduce risks. The ability to skillfully handle various riding situations through mental preparation is developed throughout the course and reinforced by specially designed on-cycle maneuvers. The course combines multi-media classroom presentations with on-cycle practice for increased confidence. You must provide your own motorcycle and have a valid license for this course.

  
This course will be offered in Summer 2008.


Note: Your motorcycle must be street legal, have front and rear brakes, have good tires, and be in good mechanical condition. Proper protective attire is required for the riding exercises.

Additional Information

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation is a national, nonprofit organization sponsored by seven leading motorcycle manufacturers: Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, and Suzuki.

Motorcycles for the Basic Riders Course (BRC) are provided by American Honda and Eastern Kentucky University's Traffic Safety Institute.

These safety programs are taught by instructors who are fully certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
